Frequently Asked Questions

BIKE TOURS

Is it safe to bike in a city with a very busy traffic like Lima?

Our tours have been designed with the safety and security of our customers as the number one priority. For that reason every tour is carried out where possible in low traffic areas such as the quieter avenues, streets, parks and bike lanes, avoiding where possible busy main roads. In any case, we can always get off, walk and jump on the bike again. Easy as it sounds.

I am a beginner cyclist, ¿Is the route Ok for me?
Our tours have been designed for cyclists of all levels. The routes are mostly flat and we have many stops to rest, tell stories and take pictures. However, the city’s drivers are not specially known for their respect to cyclists or pedestrians so some basic street cycling skills are recommended. If you have not ridden a bike in years or worse, in decades, please contact us first before placing a booking.
¿Will we have time to stop and take pictures?

Of course, you will be able to capture sights, squares, old buildings, monuments, etc. Our tours include stops every 10 or 15 minutes to rest and take advantage of the time to enjoy the places and take pictures while your guide talks about some local anecdotes and shares some historic commentaries about each site.

What happens if I get thirsty or hungry?

Our tour includes a bottle of natural water. Also, during the tour you will find some stalls where you may buy extra drinks or snacks in case you are starving.

I do not speak english, is that a problem to join a tour?

Not at all, we offer english and spanish guided tours but if you need any other language we can quote you a private service with an interpreter for your language (according to availability).

What should I wear?
Wear something comfortable and fresh. Shorts or thin trousers will be ok most of the year. Also try to wear sneakers for your own safety. Sun cream is also recommended for the summer and clear days and in winter time or for colder days you might like to bring a light jacket. Rain is never a problem in Lima.

It is up to your own discretion wether to tip or not your guide. For some local context, just please consider that in Peru, a big component of the salary in the service industry is based on gratuities. If you enjoyed your tour please let your guides know by tipping them. We know that gratuities will be more than welcome and appreciated.
Where do your tours start and finish?

All our tours start and finish at San Isidro (Los Lirios 148) however, we can change that for private reservations and make arrangements for picking you up from your hotel and drop you off there too.

WALKING TOURS

Are the walks strenuous?

Our walks require a basic level of fitness and to be able to move at a moderate pace. We cover a distance of about 5 – 6km (3 – 3.5mi) on foot in a 3 – 4hr time-frame (unless something different specified on tour description). Depending on the selected route, some walks might be slightly more strenuous than others. Since all our walking tours are given as a ‘Private tour’, we are always open to customize the route and modify it along the way to meet your needs and walking abilities.  A good gauge for most of our walking tours is we walk 1.6km (one mile) every hour of the tour.

How do I know where the walking tours meet and how will I find the guide?

Exact and clear meeting instructions will be emailed to you after you have made your tour purchase. You will receive a tour confirmation email from us with meeting instructions shortly after/during booking your tour. Your tour guide will be waiting at the specified meeting point and time.  Please be sure to check your Spam email folder if you haven’t received the confirmation email within an hour after purchase.

What happens if I am late for starting my walking tour?

Normally, each tour starts promptly at the designated time. However, since all tours are in ‘private service’, if you are not present by the start time and you have not contacted us in any form (phone call or email), we will wait for you for 30 minutes more and start the tour at your arrival adjusting the time and walking route to finish at the originally planned time. Once the 30 minute window has finished and we have not received any communication from your side, we will leave and the tour will be considered as ‘delivered’ with no option of a refund. In any case, we will always provide you with a contact number in the email with meeting instructions, in case an unforeseen event prevents you from showing up on time.

¿Will we have time to stop and take pictures?

Of course, you will be able to capture sights, squares, old buildings, monuments, etc. Our tours include numerous stops to rest and take advantage of the time to enjoy the places and take pictures while your guide talks about some local anecdotes and shares some historic commentaries about each site.

What happens if I get thirsty or hungry?
Our tour includes a bottle of natural water. Also, during the tour you will find some stalls where you may buy extra drinks or snacks in case you are hungry along the route.
I do not speak english, is that a problem to join a tour?

All our private walking tour options are given in English OR Spanish as standard, based on your booking request. You can ask for interpreter (extra cost) if available.

What should I wear?
Wear something comfortable and fresh. Shorts or thin trousers will be ok most of the year. Also try to wear walking/running shoes for your own safety and comfort. Sun cream is also recommended for the summer and clear days and in winter time or for colder days you might like to bring a light jacket. Rain is never a problem in Lima.
What should I bring for the walking tour?

Please consider using sunscreen, wear comfy walking/running shoes, a hat and sunglasses for summer/warm days. A camera if you have one is always advised since there will be plenty of photo opportunities.

Are the costs of snacks, refreshments, or alcoholic beverages included in the walking tour price?

Unless explicitly stated in the tour description, any purchases (i.e. snacks, refreshments or alcoholic drinks) made during or at the end of one of our walking tours will be paid for by the purchaser, not Bike Tours of Lima. Bike Tours of Lima always includes a free bottle of water for every participant.

I'd like to book a tour right now, how do I make a reservation?

The best way to book one of our private walks is to request it over email. We will send you instructions in order to complete payment and booking process. For las minute reservations please try calling us at +(51) 991011022.

Can I pay with my credit card?

Yes, if you book through our PayPal invoices you may use any credit card. If you do it by coming to our bike shop we recommend you to bring cash since the network of POS in Lima sometimes shuts down. All payments must be made ahead of time in order to book a spot.

What's the maximum and minimum number of people per walking tour?

Our private walks have no minimum (unless it is indicated on the description); one person is enough for us to go on tour. As we always prefer to work with small groups to ensure the quality and safety, the number of people shall not exceed 12 people per walking tour.

Can children come on a tour?

All our tours are geared for people age 10 and up. If you have younger children and would like to go on a tour, please contact us about the possibility of a customized tour.

It is up to your own discretion to tip your guide or not, however, please consider that in Peru, a big component of the salary/wage in the service industry is based on gratuities. If you enjoyed your tour please let your guides know by tipping them. We are sure that gratuities will be more than welcome and appreciated.
